Innovation rooted in tradition
We have been growing wine in the heart of the Rheingau since 1670 – a region ideal for great Rieslings and distinctive Pinot Noirs. What once began as a small family business is now being continued with international perspective and great passion.

our origins, our future
The Rheingau is far more than just our home—it's both our origin and our inspiration. Between the slopes of the Taunus Mountains and the Rhine meadows, wines with exceptional minerality, freshness, and depth are produced here. The vineyards around Johannisberg, in particular, offer us the ideal conditions: quartzite-rich soils, optimal sunlight, and the steady westerly wind ensure healthy harvests and expressive aromas.

1670
Foundation and winemaking origins
We've been growing wine in Johannisberg since 1670 and are one of the oldest winemaking families in the Rheingau. Our Rieslings grow on stony quartzite soils, which lend them their distinct minerality. With experience, passion, and tradition, spanning eleven generations, our heritage and signature continue to shape the character of our wines.

1775
Late harvest: a happy coincidence
In 1775, Johannisberg became world-famous for its first late harvest—a result of a delayed harvest permit and Riesling grapes suffering from noble rot. The monks pressed them anyway—and made wine history. We had already been active in viticulture for over 100 years at that point and experienced this milestone firsthand.

1880 - 1950
Tradition strengthens
Our family business has been run with great dedication for generations. Winemaking knowledge is carefully passed down from parent to child , ensuring tradition and quality are preserved . The vineyards are carefully tended , with a focus on natural cultivation and preserving soil fertility .

1950-1970
Innovative thoughts
With modern cellar technology such as temperature-controlled fermentation and concrete tanks, we enhance the clarity of our wines. A fully automated bottling system ensures hygiene and consistent quality. This is how we combine traditional craftsmanship with innovation – for sustainable production and wines with precision, character, and authenticity.

Tradition & Progress
In 1998, Michael Trenz, the eleventh generation, took over the business and continued the family tradition . A significant milestone was when we were named "Newcomer of the Year" by Feinschmecker in 2005 —the first recognition of our work. Three years later, in 2008 , another honor followed when Gault Millau named us "Discovery of the Year."

Past as foundation
Today, we build on centuries of winemaking experience – with fresh ideas, a modern style, and an open mind. We combine tradition with contemporary interpretation: consciously, attentively, and stylishly. This creates wines with provenance and character that break new ground. Our history is our strength – and our drive for the future.

Johannisberger
hell
This vineyard name, which can be found throughout wine-growing regions, has nothing to do with "hell." The word "hell" is derived from "Halde" (slope) and refers to a steep slope. The Johannisberger Hölle (hovel) was first mentioned around 1180 as "helda in monte sancti Johannis." This refers to the steep, rocky hill that slopes down from Johannisberg Castle, 30 percent southwest-facing, into the valley below. It boasts a great geological diversity. Clay and loess soils predominate, but there are also mixed soils with gravel and stones. The location also offers a favorable climate, as early in the evening, cold air from the nearby forest blows through the Elsterbach valley over the vineyards, preserving the fresh and lively character of the resulting wine, which is characterized by fine acidity and minerality.
